Balloons Over Broadway

My family are New Yorkers. So even though I grew up in California, every Thanksgiving started bright and early with the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. My sister and I would watch in awe as one elaborate balloon after another would float above Broadway. It was just so magical. In the last couple of years we’ve introduced the tradition to our own kids. Which is why I was so excited when I unpacked Balloons Over Broadway: The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy’s Parade by Melissa Sweet. Its a colorful mixed-media picture book that tells the story of Tony Sarg, the puppeteer who invented the balloons back in 1928. Of course its a perfect story for this time of year, but its just an inspirational story in general – about the man who’s vision has captivated imaginations for four generations.
