A recently unveiled study by Civic Economics-American Booksellers Association called, Amazon and Empty Storefronts, showed that by not collecting sales tax in many states and by swiping sales from bricks-and-mortar businesses of all kinds, in 2014, the online giant had taken away more than $1 billion in taxes from state and local governments. The study also estimated that Amazon’s book sales in 2014 were about $5.6 billion, representing some “3,600 bookshop equivalents and 40,000 bookstore employees.”
